Hunosa’s project to install a green hydrogen plant at the Fondón well in Sama takes a decisive step forward. The Principality’s Department of Mobility, Environment and Emergency Management has approved the strategic environmental assessment of the plan, which will speed up its processing as a full environmental impact assessment is not required. This resolution is a key boost for an investment that will reach 18 million euros and is financed by the European Union.
The regional administration considers that the document submitted by Hunosa, also endorsed by the Langreo City Council, meets the sufficient conditions to guarantee the environmental sustainability of the project, as long as the established technical criteria are respected.
The plan, called “Mine to H2”, is led by Hunosa and partially financed with funds from the European Union’s Research Fund for Coal and Steel. Companies and entities such as Alsa, Hyrem, the University of Oviedo, the Asturian Energy Foundation (FAEN), Duro Felguera and the Polish institute GIG-PIB are also participating.
The initiative is complemented by an urban reform of the Fondón area, which reorganizes more than 22,000 square meters to facilitate new productive activities linked to renewable energies. Specifically, some 3,000 square meters currently unused will be used for clean energy facilities. Hunosa will assume the cost of this work, which exceeds 1.1 million euros.
The project aims to be a benchmark in circular economy by taking advantage of local resources: water from old mining galleries, electricity generated by a future photovoltaic plant on reclaimed soils and thermal energy derived from geothermal energy. Overall, the initiative reinforces the commitment to turn the industrial heritage of the Nalón valley into a driving force for innovation and energy transition.
