The national network of mining tourism destinations in former coal territories, such as the Asturian basins linked to Hunosa, has been launched. The project, financed with about 144,000 euros by the Ministry for Ecological Transition through the Institute for Just Transition, will have an initial duration of 18 months, until mid-2027.
This network aims to create sustainable tourism experiences linked to the industrial mining heritage, in order to revalue these territories, promote inclusive tourism and open up new economic and social opportunities based on memory and innovation. It involves areas in León, Teruel, Córdoba and As Pontes (A Coruña), coordinated through the Ciudad de la Energía Foundation and with technical support from specialized companies.
The plan includes identifying resources and tourism operators in each area, offering training to local actors and launching pilot experiences before their commercial and communication launch. The authorities emphasize that, in addition to diversifying the economy after decarbonization, the aim is for very distant territories to work together, generating synergies and a common identity around their mining past.
