Project | Longs Electric Arc Furnace LEAF (Longs Electric Arc Furnace) |
Promoter | ArcelorMittal España S. A. |
Brief description | The project involves the construction of an electric arc furnace (EAF) that will transform the existing steel mill at the Gijón factory. The new facility will have a production capacity of 1.1 million tons of semi-products with a low carbon footprint to supply the Rail and Wire Rod Mills of the same factory. |
Execution period | Expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2026 |
CO2 emissions avoided | The reduction ofCO2 emissions is obtained by changing from a process in which the main raw material was pig iron from the Blast Furnace, generated by the use of fossil fuels, to a process of feeding mainly scrap and iron pre-reduced products in which electric energy generated from renewable sources will be used, depending on its availability. Initially, the production through the new Electric Steel Mill will allow a reduction inCO2 emissions of more than 35%, with the possibility of reaching a reduction of 1 million tons ofCO2 equivalent per year once the transition phase is completed. |
