Project | Mine-to-H2 |
Promoters | Industrial promoters: HUNOSA, Duro Felguera, HyREN and ALSA. Other participating entities: GIG (coordinator), University of Oviedo and FAEN. |
Brief description | Start-up of a 2.5 MW green hydrogen production plant at Pozo Fondón, with auxiliary facilities including compression and storage systems, H2 transport equipment, a 2.2 MWp photovoltaic plant and the acquisition of 2 buses by ALSA. |
Main characteristics | The hydrogen produced from mine water electrolysis will be used for road transportation, for injection into the natural gas grid and for use in industry. The electrolysis capacity will be 2.5 MW and an estimated production of 270 t/year. H2 will be stored in pressurized tanks and transported to customer facilities. The heat produced in the electrolysis will be recovered and integrated into the existing heat network, which currently uses mine water and forest biomass as thermal resources. |
Execution period | The project started in 2024, although the electrolysis plant is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027. |
Total budget (€) | The total budget of the project is 18 M€, although 50% non-repayable financing has been obtained through the European Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) program. |
Forecast of employment generated | It is expected to generate direct employment for 26 people during the design, construction and installation phase and 16 people during the operation phase. |
CO2 emissions avoided | 2,260 t/year |
