On July 27, 2026, the agreement signed by the Institute for a Just Transition (ITJ) and the government of the Principality of Asturias for the implementation of the project was published in the BOPA “Hydrological, morphological, and environmental restoration of the Nalón River in the vicinity of the former Lada Thermal Power Plant in the municipality of Langreo (Asturias).”
The project will receive more than 8 million euros in funding, 75% of which will be provided by the ITJ and the remaining 25% by the Principality of Asturias.
The construction work, which is scheduled to begin in August, will restore the riverbed to reduce hazards and the risk of flooding in nearby areas. The floodplain on the left bank will be renaturalized, creating a landscaped area and pedestrian paths. In addition, a footbridge will be built to connect the riverside promenade with the town of La Felguera.
The excess material from the riverbed will be used to develop the right bank of the river where Nitrastur is located, in preparation for its upcoming urban development and the construction of the Asturian Social and Health Care Logistics Platform, a project promoted by the Government of the Principality of Asturias.
